Nothing says Merry Christmas like Happy Halloween, does it? Here's another very well done costume from our 2005 comics-themed party, this time my other roommate (now sadly settling for Manitoba living - though that's apparently an upgrade from New Brunswick if we go by any possible statistic) Emili as Death. "Fewer births = Less work" There have been many versions of Death in comics, but the best by far is Neil Gaiman's. Death of the Endless, Dream's sister from Sandman is the kind of Death you WANT to take you by the hand at the end of your life.Just like Carolynn, Emili's research didn't go all that far. She based her portrayal on the free giveaway "Death Talks About Life". It's a 6-page comic where a very personable Death talks about safe sex, AIDS and condoms, with art by Dave McKean.I don't think I learned anythng new from reading the comid, but it was good fun, especially when Death asks for a volunteer to help her teach us about how to put on a condom. That volunteer... none other than John Constantine, Hellblazer! Embarassed? John? The man who gave Satan the finger? The guy who smoked reefer with Zatanna? Well, it turns out he has to hold out a banana while Death rolls down some latex. Yeah, I guess that could be embarassing for him.
Now here's the thing. While she gives good advice, the comic has this thing on the cover:
Now, couldn't that keep the giveaway out of the hands of the people who could benefit from it? Granted, an 8-year-old probably doesn't need to read the words "anal sex" (I'm gonna get some Google hits, aren't I?), but really, it's the immature ones that need to be told about condoms, no? (Of course, Emili seems to have a different reason for advising condom-use.)Anyway, still a fun and quirky read, and for a free giveaway, that's superlative! Like Death says, if you don't want to see her prematurely...

Bonus superhero costume that I don't have any comics for!!! BassBlogger Bass as Mr. Incredible! (From the movie-themed Halloween of 2004.) Man, does he ever look the part. Great job, Basster!
