Buys
Got me some James Kochalka stuff from Top Shelf, because I AM a Kochalka nut. Among these, Super F*ckers #1 (the only issue I missed), Johnny Boo, American Elf Book Two (in glorious color) and the James Kochalka Superstar album, Spread Your Evil Wings and Fly.
October/November are also likely to be Doctor Who months, with lots of releases. I've got a new edition of The Five Doctors (with actual features this time), The Brain of Morbius, and The Sarah Jane Adventures Season 1. And there's a lot more to come (Trial of a Time Lord, Torchwood S2, Doctor Who S4, The Infinite Quest...).
"Accomplishments"
Books: This week, I read Julian Barnes' Staring at the Sun, one of his early novels (1986) I hadn't gotten to yet (I own most if not all of his bibliography). It's the story of an ordinary woman across her 100 years of life, and was interesting to me as a depiction of a rather unintelligent woman who grows into a sort of clueless wisdom. Not an easy thing to do while retaining a strong literary style, but Barnes manages it. The third act delves into some strange science-fiction (she lives to the year 2021), but by then, you're well engrossed.
DVDs: Flipped Enterprise Season 2, putting me about a week ahead of my reviews. Season 2 is on the whole a little aimless, but it gets more interesting towards the end and is no worse a second season of Trek than, say, TNG's was. The DVD includes some nice featurettes, funny outtakes, and even a couple of commentary tracks (so if you want to hear the writers of Regeneration defend their Borg episode, it's a must). On to Season 3! Man, am I really 48 episodes away from completing my 2-year mission? I guess I am.
Games: Finished Portal (the basic storyline at least), that funny little game that is the only reason to buy the Orange Box. My roommate introduced me to it and I quickly got the hang of it. A lot of fun, and I look forward to replaying it with the designer's commentary (great feature!) and then trying to blow the game's fuses by doing all the Achievements. Maybe.
Someone Else's Post of the Week
Canadian elections are this Tuesday, and the Americans' are less than a month away, so I propose a series of Caleb's comics from Everyday Is Like Wednesday, which he calls Super-Endorsements. Who are Superman, Batman, Iron Man, et al. voting for? You're not really gonna find out from DC Decisions, that's for sure.
