Star Trek 847: Around the Clock

847. Around the Clock

PUBLICATION: Star Trek #27, DC Comics, June 1986

CREATORS: Robert Greenberger (writer), Tom Sutton and Ricardo Villagran (artists)

STARDATE: 8988.3 (follows the last issue)

PLOT: It's a boring day at the edges of the galaxy. Chekov simulates an attack to surprise Kirk, but it's not appreciated. Sulu falls in love with a Lt. Maria Morelli. Saavik feels isolated and has conversations with various humans about companionship. Sulu teaches a fencing class. McCoy has an argument about computers in his sickbay. And Uhura sings a few songs.

CONTINUITY: Plenty of references to past comic book adventures, as well as to Sulu's swordsmanship from The Naked Time. Saavik wears that white outfit and her hair down from ST II.

DIVERGENCES: None.

PANEL OF THE DAY - Damn pinko ships!
REVIEW: A fine character development issue that gives every cast member at least one scene (except Spock, but he's not aboard Excelsior). Chekov's sickle ships are quite hilarious (I wish they'd stood without a later explanation though), and though I never quite buy his naive, reckless kid act at his age, there's a tender moment where Uhura consoles him. She and Scotty act like the parents of the crew, and I find their affection to the others... affecting! Not a lot of action, but enough moments and humor to make it a good issue.
