"Accomplishments"
Obviously, I've read a lot of comics over the weekend, as well as a Star Trek novel, but basically just...
DVDs: Flipped Choke, the Chuck Palahniuk novel that recently became a Sam Rockwell movie. I had a couple problems with it, though mostly because I'd read the book. For one, while there are notable differences, it was just too much like the book. Maybe I shouldn't have expected Fight Club's innovative additions from a small indie movie, that's my fault, and the more I think about it, the better the movie gets. My other peeve doesn't go away so easily, and that's the casting of Kelly MacDonald as Paige. I don't quite buy her in the role, and I think it's down to performance. But then, there's a lot of apathetic performance in this movie, but that's because it - like the book - is in large part about finding one's identity, rather than being what others expect you to be. That barrier between a character's true self and the image they project is what prevents us from connecting with them at times. This gets better on a second viewing though. The extras include a funny commentary with Rockwell and director Clark Gregg, deleted scenes, a gag reel, a conversation between Gregg and Palahniuk on adaptation that Zack Snyder had better look at, and other featurette-ish bits. It's a good package that actually brought to light some themes from the book. Now somebody adapt Lullaby for the big screen already.
New Unauthorized Doctor Who CCG cards: Started work on Terror of the Vervoids, but haven't produced a completed card yet. That should come tomorrow and over the week.
Someone Else's Post of the Week
Ok, Devon at Second Printing, in an effort to find Grant Morrison's "Sandman" or "Watchmen", has come up with a brilliant plan. Pit all of Morrison's projects against one another. I'm a little afraid that, depending on SP's readers, the contest might go to something mainstream like JLA, 52 or New X-Men (not that they aren't good, but are they really his Sandman?), but there's only one way to prevent it: Check out Morrison Madness and then Second Printing's later posts to make educated votes. Can't wait to find out the answer.
