So context. Rom. Rom has just recently declared open war on the Dire Wraiths and made sure everybody knows it. Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema. Mantlo and Buscema are inhuman machines and work on both Rom and Incredible Hulk (and more besides). Hulk. The Hulk has just returned from the Secret Wars which have shaken Bruce Banner's hold on the beast within. He's once more in danger of losing himself to the Rampaging Hulk. Fact: These two have yet to meet. All caught up?
After a loving, "here's a REAL hero", recap of Rom's adventures, we rejoin the Hulk's already in progress. Banner has attempted to cure terminally ill people with gamma radiation, but has only made them sicker, and in the case of one individual, Max Hammer, has turned him into a monster. The Hulk/Hammer fight lasts a few pages until Hammer hits Hulk where it really hurts:
Man, that's the knee he injured in Secret Wars. Not the knee! Dude, that really hurts! Result? The Savage Hulk is back!
Perfectly captured rage. Cue some pretty violent fight moments:
And
All that to say our man Rom MIGHT have a little trouble fighting the Hulk.
So where is Rom? He comes upon this area, attracted by alien energies that might be Wraith activity. It's not, it's Banner's gamma experiments. Like the good Christ figure he is, Rom takes some time out of his busy Wraith-slaying schedule to heal the sick.
The neutralizer can remove the gamma radiation from their cells, but not the original illness. So they don't look like Orion slave girls anymore, but they're still dying. I'm not sure Rom did them a favor. Can he do the same to the Hulk, however? Well, Max Hammer is drained, but the Hulk?
NO FRICKIN' WAY! Not when he's in a bitch-slapping mood!
As you can imagine, hitting his love-du-jour like that makes Banner realize what he's doing and do the only reasonable thing at this point:
Yeah, you BETTER run! Run before the awesomeness of Rom the Greatest of the Spaceknights! (You run too, but come back tomorrow for our regularly scheduled Spaceknight Saturday.)
