Star Trek 899: Repercussions

899. Repercussions

PUBLICATION: Star Trek v.2 #4, DC Comics, January 1990

CREATORS: Peter David (writer), James W. Fry and Arne Starr (artists)

STARDATE: 8484.1 (follows the last issue)

PLOT: Following Kirk's rough handling of a Chronian head of state, Starfleet puts a protocol officer over his shoulder. He wasn't expecting R.J. Blaise to be an elegant woman, however. Meanwhile, the Nasgul and Klingons get into a bidding war over Kirk's head. The price goes up, up, up...

CONTINUITY: The Uhura-Scotty thing is nipped in the bud - they were under Sybok's influence and let's just be friends. The Federation President and Klingon ambassador continue to appear.

DIVERGENCES: None.

PANEL OF THE DAY - The cult of Kirk's personality
REVIEW: A downtime issue, but it doesn't concentrate more on subplots than previous issues. Instead, it feels like the series is idling on recaps and bureaucratic consequences. As such, it's a bit of a weak chapter. It feels like the Uhura-Scotty relationship was killed by Paramount, because Peter David could certainly have stretched a little more in between movies. The Sulu-Li-M'yra love triangle isn't advanced much. The script has its moments, but isn't quite as fun as usual, and even the art is a lacking. Bottom line: Too early for R&R.
