Star Trek 983: A Wolf... in Cheap Clothing Part Three

983. A Wolf... in Cheap Clothing Part Three

PUBLICATION: Star Trek v.2 #71, DC Comics, May 1995

CREATORS: Howard Weinstein (writer), Rachel Ketchum and Pam Eklund (artists)

STARDATE: 8690.3 (follows the last issue)

PLOT: Kirk was knocked out (for a few seconds) by a short mystery man who claims to be Captain Nolli of Starfleet Intelligence on a secret mission. That mission seems to entail procuring an idol and allowing Kirk's magician girlfriend to leave with it, only to sabotage her ship to kill her and destroy the item. Though Kirk is warned off by Nolli, he still saves the magician and her cargo and meets the Enterprise (where he has to abandon his cover). Starfleet Command says Nolli is a rogue agent working to topple the Klingon government and must be stopped...

CONTINUITY: None. There is no reason why Kahless (Rightful Heir) should be on the cover.

DIVERGENCES: None.

PANEL OF THE DAY - Is this really the time to be playing video games?
REVIEW: The plot thickens into an unwholesome brew whose most important ingredient is exposition. The cliffhanger from the previous issue is totally bogus and the more Nolli's plan is explained, the less it makes sense. It's still hard to believe Kirk's undercover identity remained secret for so long when his magician girlfriend has worked for Starfleet and knows Captain Kirk by reputation (his cover name is... Kirk!). And for a comic with "Klingon Gambit" written on it, it doesn't have very many Klingons in it (none, in fact). As far as the art goes, this is Ketchum's weakest issue, seeing as stark starship interiors do not play to her strengths.
