Star Trek 1001: The Derelict

1001. The Derelict

PUBLICATION: Star Trek: The Next Generation #3, DC Comics, December 1989

CREATORS: Michael Jan Friedman (writer), Pablo Marcos (artist)

STARDATE: 42360 (follows the last issue)

PLOT: While Geordi struggles to find the fault in his engines, the Enterprise-D finds a derelict spaceship of unknown origin, devoid of life. When Riker, Pulaski, Worf and McRobb investigate, they are trapped aboard and informed they are samples meant to be put in stasis and brought to the Taxxans for study. The Enterprise goes after it, but is quickly losing ground...

CONTINUITY: None.

DIVERGENCES: None.

PANEL OF THE DAY - When the quality of drinks goes down in Ten-Forward
REVIEW: Friedman and Marcos channel TNG rather well. There's a classic Data bit about proverbs that I didn't find annoying or anything (it's even humorous, especially Picard's reactions), and a rare Picard-Guinan heart-to-heart (for "more than friends, more than family", these two didn't have very many scenes together on the show). All the characters are competently used and drawn, except for McRobb who is still a waste of ink. As for the plot du jour, it's pretty basic, so I can't say much about it. It's the wind-up, we'll see about the pitch.

Now that you've written over 1,000 posts about Star Trek fiction, how about a post on some of your reflections on the experience--do you still look forward to yet another Star Trek comic everyday, or is it a chore? Has a thousand straight days given you any new insights (good or bad) into the franchise? Just curious . . .

A good note, Jeremy. I'll work on something once this damn Frosh Fortnight is over.
