1091. The Dying of the Light
PUBLICATION: Star Trek: The Next Generation #73, DC Comics, July 1995
CREATORS: Michael Jan Friedman (writer), Gordon Purcell and Terry Pallot (artists)
STARDATE: Unknown (follows the last issue)
PLOT: Geordi finds a way to adapt Riker's strategy and the Enterprise manages to disable the lead Tholian ship, collapsing the web. On that ship, the remorseful first officer is removed from duty. Despite being free, the Enterprise is running at very low power and may not be able to escape. That's when Gowron shows up with a fleet of Klingon ships and routs the Tholians. He's also angry with the Federation who have obviously started an irresponsible war with the Tholians that has cost them outposts as well...
CONTINUITY: See previous issue. Admiral Quinn (Conspiracy) and Gowron (last seen in Rightful Heir) also appear.
DIVERGENCES: See previous issues.
PANEL OF THE DAY - Calling on the counselor in the middle of the night... oh Kyle Riker!
REVIEW: This story's scope keeps getting bigger with the arrival of the Klingons (and the always magnetic Gowron himself). Riker's strategy is vindicated and one Tholian is being set up as an ally to the Feds. Purcell is obviously having fun with the Tholian scenes and the outer space battles, and draws a fine-looking Troi. The Icarus Factor stuff is a bit of a retread, but this extended adventure may do something for the Rikers than that episode did. Time to kick it into high gear though.
