Star Trek 1132: Emancipation, Part II

1132. Emancipation, Part II

PUBLICATION: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine #5, Malibu Comics, December 1993

CREATORS: Mike W. Barr (writer), Gordon Purcell and Terry Pallot (artists)

STARDATE: Unknown (follows the last issue)

PLOT: Dax and O'Brien prevent the stolen runabout from exploding in the Wormhole and capture the Chiaran slaves involved in the attempt. An attempt on the Chiaran slaver captain's life is then made, with a bomb planted in Quark's. He survives, but his concubine, the mother of the rebel leader, is killed. The melancholy captain gives up and allows the slaves to relocate to their former homeworld. However, some of his crew disagree and attack the station by cocooning it inside its own shields. Dax and O'Brien once again save the day by sending feedback into the shields, disabling the Chiaran ship. The captain makes good on his promise and the slaves relocate peacefully.

CONTINUITY: Rom appears.

DIVERGENCES: None.

PANEL OF THE DAY - Speech bubbles are affected by gravity too.
REVIEW: I'm not sure I quite understand the technical derring-do showcased in this issue, and it's really too bad that technobabble is used twice that way. However, the Chiarans prove to be interesting aliens and not one-dimensional, which makes up for it. Once again, good art and recognizable personalities on the main cast. Time to spotlight them a bit more rather than the "guest" characters.
