Star Trek 1138: For the Glory of the Empire

1138. For the Glory of the Empire

PUBLICATION: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Hearts and Minds #1, Malibu Comics, June 1994

CREATORS: Mark A. Altman (writer), Rob Davis and Terry Pallot (artists)

STARDATE: Unknown (between Necessary Evil and Second Sight)

PLOT: Following the destruction of the K'Tang in "the Abyss" of the Gamma Quadrant, the Klingons blame the Cardassians and call for war. Meanwhile, Quark meets a sexy Seltari who kicks Cardassian ass, thinks Kira is meddling with her business, and agrees to have dinner with the Ferengi. Dax, Bashir and a Klingon head for the Abyss to investigate the K'Tang's destruction. A Betazoid negotiator is coming to the station to conciliate the Cardassians and Klingons, but his runabout is seemingly destroyed...

CONTINUITY: Morn, Rom, Dukat.

DIVERGENCES: Odo calls Quark "old friend", which is a little odd. Because the show would eventually feature a Klingon-Cardassian conflict, you'd think someone would have said "again?!" in The Way of the Warrior. Terok Nor is spelled Terrock Nor. Dabo is spelled D'abo.

PANEL OF THE DAY - Caught playin'.
REVIEW: Throwing Cardassians and Klingons into the mix together is a recipe that eventually worked for the show, so why not here? It seems worthy subject matter for a mini-series, and Altman also includes some Quark stuff to give the Ferengi something to do. Politics and action share the page, which is the best DS9 formula. Though Altman could use a Star Trek dictionary, I think he's off to a good start.
