PLOT: Dax and Bashir walk through a Bajoran museum and overhear a guide tell the story of Terok Nor's construction. Seems that the Cardassian architect fell in love with a Bajoran terrorist and allowed her to help redesign certain systems in exchange for not destroying Bajor's cultural archives. He wrung from her the promise that she wouldn't try to destroy the station, his last great achievement, before it was completed. In exchange, he betrays his superior Gul Dukar to the Resistance. They kill the Gul before he can execute all Bajorans who helped build the station. The architect must then execute his beloved, and both worry what the Gul's young son who witnessed his murder will do with his hate.

CONTINUITY: This issue shows the building of Terok Nor.

DIVERGENCES: None.

PANEL OF THE DAY - Some assembly required.
REVIEW: Really nice. It's perhaps fitting that the story starts in an art museum, because Trevor Goring's lightly painted artwork is so often a joy, filled with artistic poses and a sense that Bajor really is a great and ancient culture. Altman's almost folkloric story of how the station was built is something I hope will be followed up on. Is Gul Dukar's son, Gul Dukat? Or some other Cardassian we've met or have yet to meet? I'm intrigued. And while the issue focuses on characters well outside our cast's time frame, it is evocative of the world we know well, with nice touches like the architect comparing Cardassian and Bajoran buildings, and Gul Dukar wanting to eliminate anyone who's helped build Terok Nor, for they know too much! A fascinating prequel!
