PUBLICATION: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine #17, Malibu Comics, December 1994
CREATORS: Laurie S. Sutton (writer), Leonard Kirk and Jack Snider (artists)
STARDATE: Unknown (between Equilibrium and Second Skin)
PLOT: A half-Cardassian, half-Bajoran spy called Sueriel comes to DS9 after long years of spying for the Bajorans on Cardassia. She's soon attacked by Bajoran mobs instigated by members of the Circle. After almost being killed despite Kira's attempts to keep her safe, she asks Bashir to give her a new face. He does and she later identifies the leader of this chapter of the Circle as a double agent she often saw on Cardassia. The Circle is broken and Sueriel leaves for her new life.
CONTINUITY: Kira is haunted by the closing scene of Duet. The Klingon chef (Playing God) makes a cameo. The Circle hasn't been seen since The Siege. Cyrano Jones Inc. is a reference to The Trouble with Tribbles (sterile tribbles are seen in the store).
DIVERGENCES: None.
PANEL OF THE DAY - Cyrano Jones!
REVIEW: My one disappointment with this issue is that its story is only a single issue long. I mean, we have Kira haunted by nightmares, a new chapter of the Circle, the bad guy operating from a pet shop, Bajoran mobs (a prerequisite), a guest star with an interesting past and a strong relationship with Odo, Kira and Odo "cleaning house", and the Kirk/Snider art team filling DS9 with life. Necessarily, a lot of things happen behind the scenes and that's too bad. Sutton definitely had something to say about Kira too, but the length prevents her from going all that far with it. But what made it on the page is quite good. I'm still thinking about that ambiguous ending... what happens to Sueriel now? Even from that point, a second issue would have been fascinating.
