1160. Deep Space Mine!
PUBLICATION: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine #22, Malibu Comics, May 1995
CREATORS: Dan Mishkin (writer), Terry Pallot (artist)
STARDATE: Unknown (follows issue #20)
PLOT: The Gamma Quadrant aliens known as the Sa'arovians hold a p^lanet-destroying weapon, known as the Shatterer of Worlds, which keeps the Dominion at bay. Grand Nagus Zek is negotiating with renegade Sa'arovians to buy the Shatterer and has told them DS9 is owned by the Ferengi Alliance to strengthen his position. Sisko and crew go along with the deception, changing places with Quark's bar staff, so as not to anger the aliens and hopefully find a way to prevent the Shatterer falling into the wrong hands. They wine and dine them, but their authorities come to get them and threaten to destroy Bajor with the Shatterer if they don't give them their people and technology back. Quark figures out that the Shatterer is a myth and calls their bluff, later promising to keep their secret from the Dominion in exchange for leaving.
CONTINUITY: Zek appears (prior to Prophet Motive).
DIVERGENCES: None.
PANEL OF THE DAY - Our reputation abroad.
REVIEW: Now this is a better Mishkin script even if I'm not sure I buy the premise. Would Sisko REALLY switch seats with Quark? His reasoning is sometimes questionable. However, it does create some fun scenes, and the Ferengi get plenty to do, including saving the day. Sadly, Dax isn't quite as sexily clad as on the cover. Ahem. I like how Mishkin always starts in the middle of the action and then catches you up - a good way to defeat the low page count - but this is the first time I consider the rest of his story strong enough for a positive review.
