Star Trek 1163: Rats in a Maze

1163. Rats in a Maze / A Tree on Bajor

PUBLICATION: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Maquis - Soldier of Peace #2, Malibu Comics, March 1995

CREATORS: Mark A. Altman / R.A. Jones (writers), Rob Davis and Terry Pallot / Leonard Kirk and Jack Snider (artists)

STARDATE: Unknown (follows the last issue)

PLOT: Captured with the Maquis at a Cardassian prison camp, Bashir invokes Obsidian Order connections to get a message back to Garak. Sisko and Garak procure a Cardassian shuttle and head for the camp, but when they get there, they are captured as well. Turns out the camp commandant, Gul Dulcet, is an "old friend" of Garak's... In A Tree on Bajor, Sisko brings Jake to Bajor for a tree-planting ceremony to symbolize the rebirth of a barren wasteland. It stirs great emotion in the boy, who recalls his mother's own gardening.

CONTINUITY: See previous issue (Maquis). Dukat and Garak appear. A Cardassian vole (Playing God) is shown eating at the prisoners' meals. Sisko picks up a Cardassian shuttle at Qualor II (Unification). A Tree on Bajor seems to feature a cameo by Bajoran musician Varani (Sanctuary). The story flashes back to the Saratoga on the day of Wolf 359 (Emissary).

DIVERGENCES: None.

PANEL OF THE DAY - Groan.
REVIEW: The Maquis story proceeds apace as Altman brings in more elements from the television show (the Order, Qualor II) in a way that makes perfect sense and doesn't confuse. Suddenly, it's a Garak story, and that's a good thing. The back-up is a short vignette, but a sweet one. Nice to see Jake and Jennifer together, for one thing. This is the kind of moment that's been missing from the regular series in recent reviews. A personal subplot.
