1167. Acceptable Losses
PUBLICATION: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine #24, Malibu Comics, June 1995
CREATORS: Dan Mishkin (writer), Leonard Kirk and John Montgomery (artists)
STARDATE: Unknown (follows the last issue)
PLOT: Kira flies an old freighter to Ares, a planet in the Gamma Quadrant that purports to have been contacted by the Prophets, which they call the Wargods, in order to retrieve the orb stolen by con man Lance Crockett. As soon as she beams down, her ship is destroyed by the war-crazed Aresians. The planet is alerted to her presence and she is pursued by both the Warlords and the dissidents who want to be Warlords until Crockett saves her life and beams her aboard his ship. He has the stolen orb and plans on selling it back to Bajor, but wasn't counting on the Defiant uncloaking in front of his ship. That's when he informs Kira that the Aresians plan to invade Bajor...
CONTINUITY: See previous issue (Orbs, Kai Winn).
DIVERGENCES: None.
PANEL OF THE DAY - Vulcan neck pinch---FAIL!
REVIEW: Part 2 of the Secret of the Last Orb trilogy has plenty of action and Kira coming up roses. Crockett comes in like a shining knight at the end, but Kira and Dax get the drop on him, and Kira generally handles herself both physically and philosophically through most of the issue. The art remains strong, and the characters like the Kai act like they should. Can't wait to see how the mystery of the (improbably named) Aresians will be explained.
