Star Trek 1189: Liberty

1189. Liberty

PUBLICATION: Starfleet Academy #2, Marvel Comics, January 1997

CREATORS: Chris Cooper (writer), Chris Renaud and Andy Lanning (artists)

STARDATE: Unknown (follows the last issue)

PLOT: The girls go to Syndey on leave from school and get into a bar brawl. Faced with a fight she can't physically win, T'Priell remembers how she proved herself to her father by defeating a wild animal with a telepathic touch and does the same. Meanwhile, back at the Academy, Nog gets into Decker's comic book collection, "ruining" them, so he compensates by giving Decker half the "shares" in his mint copy of Marvel Comics #1. Decker is warned off Nog, however, by a member of Red Squad who wants to recruit him...

CONTINUITY: Red Squad (Homefront) wants to recruit Matt Decker. Nog picked up Marvel Comics #1 in Little Green Men.

DIVERGENCES: None.

PANEL OF THE DAY - That settles it. Humans ARE worse than Ferengi.
REVIEW: Still a fun time, even if I have trouble naming the female characters (too many of the same letters in each name, I think). The girls' night out has a fun punchline, but also a dramatic throughline that incorporates T'Priell's mysterious "Romulan sleeper" visions. They're all pretty broadly drawn at this point, two of them as staunch feminists, and the Andorian as a flirtatious brawler. Over on the boys' side, I was happy to see the comic try to connect with Nog's journey in DS9, though the stuff about the (only Marvel) comics was a bit self-serving. In both cases, the humor takes the edge off.
