1210. Public Enemies, Private Lives, Conclusion
PUBLICATION: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine #9, Marvel Comics, September 1997
CREATORS: Mariano Nicieza (writer), Tom Grindberg and Bob Almond (artists)
STARDATE: 50579.8 (follows the last issue)
PLOT: Sisko and Cal Hudson face down Tomalak's Warbird, while the O'Briens, Kira and Jake escape their Romulan captors on Maurer IV. Tomalak's not happy with his son who has botched the operation by letting his men kill Maquis and capture Federation citizens, improvisations that have brought both sides together and exposed Romulan involvement. While Tomalak's son runs after a fleeing Jake, his subcommander decides to attack the Defiant and Maquis raider because he detects a Klingon aboard (Worf). The smaller ships hold their own and when Tomalak returns, he chastises his crew. In the meantime, the two sons have found each other and Jake gives Natak a helping hand that appeals to the Romulan's honor. The truce holds and everyone returns to their own ships.
CONTINUITY: See previous issue (Keiko, Tomalak, Maquis, Cal Hudson).
DIVERGENCES: None.
PANEL OF THE DAY - When sound effects go to war.
REVIEW: Again, the Grindberg/Almond team shines and the story is fairly solid. I do question the inclusion of Cal Hudson who gets only a couple panels. There's not much to his appearance and it actually deflates the point that the Romulans ironically brought the two sides they were trying to set up against one another closer together. Cal and Ben are already old friends, and despite their falling out, it is much easier for them to come together to save Jake than it would be for Sisko and Eddington or some completely unknown Maquis commander. Still, bonus points for having Jake get out of his predicament in his own way, using his likability, compassion and debating skills.
