Star Trek 1217: Homeostasis, the Conclusion

1217. Homeostasis, the Conclusion

PUBLICATION: Star Trek: Voyager #5, Marvel Comics, March 1997

CREATORS: Howard Weinstein (writer), Jesus Redondo and Sergio Melia (artists)

STARDATE: 49641.6 (follows the last issue)

PLOT: Chakotay and Neelix find the natives of the devastated planet and these agree to give Voyager duranium in exchange for supplies and a cure for the botanical virus. Kes works on the later even as Voyager gets routed by Kazon ships. In order to get at the just-mined ore, Tom Paris flies the ship like it suffered catastrophic computer failure and simulates a crash with a torpedo, actually landing on the planet. While the ore is loaded and the ship's phasers repaired, Kes finds a cure for the virus. After Voyager destroys the Kazon operation and defeats their ships, it dusts the entire planet with the antidote.

CONTINUITY: See previous issue (Kazon). The Kazon in this story have been identified as the Oglamar (Maneuvers, Alliances). Presumably the Maje is Valek.

DIVERGENCES: None.

PANEL OF THE DAY - Colorists should read the script.
REVIEW: I'll give Weinstein credit for 1) not falling back on his usual obsessions and 2) getting Voyager out of trouble with a minimum of technobabble. Paris' solution is even inspired. So all in all, a good, if simple, little story with at least one moment of triumph and Kes making Neelix eat his earlier words. Redondo's highwire-walking figures aside (it's true that they often have their arms outstretched), he's not all that adept at drawing ship battles, which would have been a plus here.
