Star Trek 1219: Relicquest, Part II

1219. Relicquest, Part II

PUBLICATION: Star Trek: Voyager #7, Marvel Comics, May 1997

CREATORS: Ben Raab (writer), Jesus Redondo and Sergio Melia (artists)

STARDATE: Unknown (follows the last issue)

PLOT: Janeway and the captains of three other vessels are thrown together to complete the "Relicquest" for the alien Bonai. If they succeed, their greatest wish will each come true (a cure for the Phage, a return to a Trabe golden age, a Kazon technological renaissance, and a return trip to Earth for Voyager). Only Janeway seems to be willing to work with, and not against, the others however. She may have to save the Kazon trying to kill her when he is jumped by a gorilla-like creature. In orbit, Chakotay asks B'Elanna to prepare an old Maquis trick called the "Phantom", and prepares to use it when the three enemy ships decide Voyager is easy pickings...

CONTINUITY: See previous issue (Kazon, Trabe, Vidiians).

DIVERGENCES: See previous issue (alien crew). There are some noticeably healthy Vidiians aboard the ship.

PANEL OF THE DAY - Really? You're gonna plug THAT title in the dialog?
REVIEW: Definitely better than Part I, in large part because of the villains' thought bubbles. Raab has fun putting ironic opportunistic thoughts in their heads. And though we don't see the "Phantom" in this issue, I'm curious as to what this Maquis trick will be. There is untapped potential in Chakotay's tactics (in virtually everything about Chakotay, really), and I'm happy to see a writer utilize them. In the "careful what you ask" column, Raab has Kim ask Tom why such a rebel would have agreed to become a good little Starfleet officer again, and Tom can't come up with an answer. I'm sure the Voyager writers appreciate it.
