Star Trek 1240: Trekkers

1240. Trekkers

PUBLICATION: Star Trek Unlimited #9, Marvel Comics, May 1998

CREATORS: Dan Abnett and Ian Edginton (writers), Greg Scott and Joe Rubinstein (artists)

STARDATE: 5997.1 (before The Motion Picture)

PLOT: While on shore leave, Sulu and Chekov play a card game with Klingons on a neutral station. Chekov manages to win General Krag's marker, after which the duo make their way to their new shuttle and head for the Enterprise. However, they keep being attacked by Klingon birds-of-prey, and meeting Krag again, they discover that the marker represents the whole of his family and holdings, which is why everybody wants it. Krag further states that he is Chekov's servant. Chekov puts him to good use, asking him to defeat the other Klingons and beaming him and Sulu out of his exploding shuttle. In order to keep Krag's honor intact, Chekov exchanges the marker for Krag's D-7 heavy cruiser, which he then delivers to the Enterprise.

CONTINUITY: Introduces a shuttle model to TOS that is closer to what is seen in the movies. The existence of Demora Sulu was only revealed in Generations. She was just born here as Chekov is asked to be her godfather.

DIVERGENCES: According to The Captain's Daughter, Sulu should not meet Demora until she is 6 years old (and shouldn't be born for another 2 years).

PANEL OF THE DAY - It's not what you think!
REVIEW: A comedy, a buddy story, a road trip, and an action movie all wrapped into one, Trekkers is loads of fun. Sulu and Chekov find innovative ways to escape their pursuers, and their chemistry together is evident. They make a great double act. Excellent art on the part of Scott and Rubinstein as well, and I do wish we'd seen more of their Uhura. Of all the Marvel series based on the actual shows, Unlimited is easily the best, and I'm sorry to say there's only one issue left to review.
