Star Trek 1316: Losses

1316. Losses

PUBLICATION: Star Trek: Klingons - Blood Will Tell #5, IDW Comics, September 2007

CREATORS: Scott Tipton and David Tipton (writers), David Messina (artist)

STARDATE: Unknown (during The Undiscovered Country)

PLOT: Having decided to cast a vote for peace, Kahnrah is attacked by assassins aboard a train who want to prevent him from reaching the High Council. Kahnrah makes the train crash and gets away from them, but is blocked by his own granddaughter, who not only betrayed him to the other side, but is ready to kill or die to stop him from casting that vote. He is forced to kill her, and reaches the High Council just in time to throw his support Gorkon's way.

CONTINUITY: See previous issues (The Undiscovered Country, QuchHa). Gorkon and Chang appear (The Undiscovered Country). Chang quotes from Romeo and Juliet.

DIVERGENCES: See previous issue (title).

PANEL OF THE DAY - Klingon trains... only slightly safer than the New York subway system.
REVIEW: A worthy finale full of action and drama. I was surprised to see Klingon public transit, but it creates an interesting setting for the assassination attempt. Even better is the fight between Kahnrah and his granddaughter, which is as well choreographed as it is touching. It is suitably operatic, as is Kahnrah's speech to the Council. Chang seems to play both sides, as he did in ST VI, and the table is set for the film and its game changing events. A tragic, but hopeful end to this very fun mini-series. More like this, please!
