Star Trek 1317: Captain's Personal Log

1317. Captain's Personal Log

PUBLICATION: Focus on... Star Trek #1, IDW Comics, July 2007

CREATORS: David Tischman (writer), Leonard O'Grady (artist)

STARDATE: 5949.99 (immediately after Turnabout Intruder)

PLOT: Captain Kirk records a captain's log just after the events of the television series, one which contains very special words.

CONTINUITY: Janice Lester is still in custody (Turnabout Intruder). It is implied that this is where Kirk put to tape the classic opening, words first spoken by Zefram Cochrane (Broken Bow).

DIVERGENCES: None.

PANEL OF THE DAY - Kirk remembers being a woman and throws up a little bit in his mouth.
REVIEW: Focus on... Star Trek is basically a promotional product, but it does have a 5-page story. Maybe "story" is the wrong word. Kirk's log tells us where we are at the end of the original series, and sets up, thematically, the Year Four mini-series. There's really nothing to it, but the idea that this may be where Kirk says the whole "Space... the final frontier" speech tickled me immensely (it's the bit where he amends Cochrane from "go boldly" to "boldly go".) Pretty wonderful for a non-story. The rest of the issue features interviews about the comic book making process, with writers and artists chiming in with comments about IDW's first few projects, some yet to come. Sadly, the "What If?" style Probability Factor was never released. I would have loved that one.
