Star Trek 1350: Mirror Images, Part 1

1350. Mirror Images, Part 1

PUBLICATION: Star Trek: Mirror Images #1, IDW Comics, July 2008

CREATORS: Scott and David Tipton (writers), David Messina (artist)

STARDATE: Unknown (concurrent with stories between The Cage and Where No Man Has Gone Before)

PLOT: In the Mirror Universe, Commander Kirk makes an attempt on Captain Pike's life. Though he is not discovered, he is nonetheless the prime suspect. Part of the crew seems loyal to him, including Scotty who will deliver the Tantalus Device when it arrives from an Orion trader, and McCoy who is his principal confidante. But even as Spock, apparently loyal to Pike, investigates the attempted assassination, McCoy walks into Pike's quarters apparently ready to give up Kirk's plan.

CONTINUITY: The whole series takes place in the Mirror Universe (Mirror, Mirror). Guest appearances by the Mirror equivalents of Captain Pike and Kelso (The Cage), as well as a yeoman who is probably Janice Rand.

DIVERGENCES: None.

PANEL OF THE DAY - How Yeoman Rand might have gotten into my Top 100 Sexiest.
REVIEW: Going back in time to trace Kirk's rise to power is worthy of a mini-series, though the ending is pretty much a foregone conclusion. Hopefully, there will be surprises along the way. Already, the idea of a Pike Enterprise with most of the crew we know from Kirk's reign is an interesting notion. Seems like Pike is overstaying his welcome, and Kirk's pawns are moving against him. Where will Spock throw his support (likely answer: logic). For the record, I don't think McCoy will actually betray Kirk, but rather mislead Pike. I mean, he survives to Mirror, Mirror, doesn't he? I don't know if that's actually Rand above (sent to seduce Pike?), but I hope so, if only to see TOS characters that weren't in the original episode get mirrored. There's potential for coolness here, but as of now, it's just a set-up of key relationships. We'll have to see, but I like the premise. Hey, I'd pay for a series that was just the Mirror versions of all the classic eps.
