1376. Spock: Reflections, Issue 1
PUBLICATION: Star Trek: Spock - Reflections #1, IDW Comics, July 2009
CREATORS: Scott Tipton and David Tipton (writers), David Messina (artist)
STARDATE: 49632.7 (between Tuvix and Rules of Engagement; flashbacks occur 78 and 125 years earlier)
PLOT: On the trip between Romulus and Earth on an Orion transport, Spock reflects on the past. He recalls boarding the Enterprise-B some time after Kirk's death, and as a youth, running through the wilderness at all hours. Though his father at first objects, Sarek follows him onto a summit and discovers this is where his son feels the most Vulcan, "of that place".
CONTINUITY: Spock missed his original opportunity to see the Enterprise-B and Captain Harriman in Generations. We see Sarek and Amanda as young parents.
DIVERGENCES: None.
PANEL OF THE DAY - The most common rock formation in the Trek universe
REVIEW: They're not kidding about "Reflections". It really is just a couple of flashbacks. However, they're meaningful flashbacks, though not meant to continue from issue to issue. Think of it as Untold Tales of Spock. Here we see him confront the idea of Kirk's death, with Harriman characteristically putting his foot in it, and one of those infamous fights between him and Sarek. Except that it ends more happily than reported. I could have done with fewer silent panels of Vulcan vistas in lieu of more meat, but as far as quiet, character-building comics go, it's a good one.
