1379. Spock: Reflections, Issue 4
PUBLICATION: Star Trek: Spock - Reflections #4, IDW Comics, October 2009
CREATORS: Scott Tipton and David Tipton (writers), David Messina (artist)
STARDATE: Unknown (follows the last issue; flashback occurs just before The Wrath of Khan)
PLOT: Spock brings Kirk's body back to Earth and has occasion to reflect on his past. He remembers how he mentored Saavik at the Academy and how Scotty's nephew put himself in danger during a simulation, not unlike how he sacrificed himself at the end of ST II. Picard meets Spock at Kirk's grave in Iowa and asks him if he will return to Starfleet, but Spock goes back to Romulus to continue his work.
CONTINUITY: The first flashback takes place while Spock and Scotty teach at the Academy and features Saavik and Scotty's nephew Peter (The Wrath of Khan).
DIVERGENCES: None.
PANEL OF THE DAY - It's only ever about Kirstie Alley's Saavik.
REVIEW: This quiet little mini-series ends as quietly as it started, and I can't fault it for that. While I did love to see Spock's Academy days and how such moments reflected the events of ST II, I still DO find fault with how all these cut scenes relate to Spock's journey. He's in effect reenacting ST III, going back for Kirk's body and returning it to its home. The "reflections" just don't have a lot to do with that and are only tenuously connected to the framing tale. Still and interesting study of the character through various untold moments of his life.
