...of the Daleks

Being an attempt to fully catalog the official and officially licensed Doctor Who stories that feature the word Dalek.

TV Series
The Daleks
The Dalek Invasion of Earth
The Daleks' Masterplan
The Power of the Daleks
The Evil of the Daleks
Day of the Daleks
Planet of the Daleks
Death to the Daleks
Genesis of the Daleks
Destiny of the Daleks
Resurrection of the Daleks
Revelation of the Daleks
Remembrance of the Daleks
Dalek
Daleks in Manhattan (why not The Daleks Take Manhattan? Just another disappointment regarding this two parter)
Evolution of the Daleks
Victory of the Daleks

Films
Doctor Who and the Daleks
Daleks' Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D.
(Both are remakes of the first two Dalek stories, with very close titles.)

Stage Plays
The Curse of the Daleks
Doctor Who and the Daleks in the Seven Keys to Doomsday

Video Games
Dalek Attack
City of the Daleks

Novels
War of the Daleks
Legacy of the Daleks
Prisoner of the Daleks
(You'd think there would be more of them, but Virgin couldn't use them, so that's a big chunk gone.)

Short Stories and Novellas
The Dalek Factor
We are the Daleks!
I am a Dalek

Audios
Fear of the Daleks
Renaissance of the Daleks
Plague of the Daleks
Brotherhood of the Daleks
Return of the Daleks
Enemy of the Daleks
The Time of the Daleks
Blood of the Daleks
Death and the Daleks
Dalek Empire (I, II, III and IV; I has a chapter entitled Invasion of the Daleks; II is subtitled Dalek War)
The Dalek Conquests

Comics
Attack of the Daleks
The Planet of the Daleks
Return of the Daleks (a popular title, it seems)
The Dalek Revenge
Abslom Daak... Dalek Killer
Nemesis of the Daleks
Emperor of the Daleks!
The Dalek Project (not released)
The Only Good Dalek
Extermination of the Daleks

So that's what's taken. What's left? Obviously, the Daleks have appeared many more times without showing their plungers in the title. We could in fact have fun re-titling some of their New Who appearances... For The Parting of the Ways, how about Secret of the Daleks. For Doomsday, Cult of the Daleks (I also like Trash Talking of the Daleks). And for Journey's End, Nihilism of the Daleks (ooh, pretentious!). But probably you can do better in the comments section.

I've always loved the way that, in 99% of the stories titled "...of the Daleks," the writers try to act like it's some huge surprise when the villain is revealed as...the Daleks. Sorry, guys you already spoiled the first cliffhnager with your title!

At least the Cybermen titles were (usually) more oblique...

I know! Obviously, they needed to use the word Dalek so more people would watch, given their popularity.

The New series has been better about this, although in an Internet Age, it's hard to keep secrets anyway.

The best Dalek title is the title to the novelisation of their first TV story: "Doctor Who in an Exciting Adventure with the
Daleks."

Alternate titles:

The Space Museum - Cameo of the Daleks
The Chase - Runaround of the Daleks
Mission to the Unknown - The Daleks Kick Doctor Who Out of His Own Show (or Dalek Cutaway, I guess)
Frontier in Space - The Dalek Manipulation of Earth
The Five Doctors - Token Appearance of the Daleks
Bad Wolf - The Dalek Game Shows of Death
The Parting of the Ways - The Messiah Complex of the Dalek Emperor
Army of Ghosts - Surprise Appearance of the Daleks
Doomsday - I like Trash Talk of the Daleks
The Stolen Earth - The Dalek Theft of Earth (too obvious, probably, but I'm blanking)
Journey's End - The Final Destruction of the Daleks Again
The Waters of Mars - The Dalek Flashback of Adelaide Brooke

Nothing for Pandorica/Big Bang?
-Alliance of the Daleks
-Fossil of the Daleks

Obviously to renew the surprise, one in three "Of The Daleks" story from now on has to not feature Daleks.

If I go by the audios, the less Daleks are featured in a Dalek-related story, the better. On audio, the voices can be annoying.

Also, see Genesis of the Daleks.

I'd love a Dalek-less Dalek story.

D'oh! Can't believe I left off Pandorica Opens/ Big Bang. Fossil of the Daleks is excellent.

Big Bang - Sorry about making the Daleks fat but look this is a stone one is that cool enough to make up for it... of the Daleks?
Siskoid said…
Bit long, but that's what I call it in my heart.

Coalition of the Daleks might be even better for Pandorica. (And I'm tempted to offer Calcification of the Dalek(s) for Big Bang along with it.)

I'm surprised we haven't had a Dalek-free Dalek story, in the Books or audios actually: either something about the earliest days of the Kaled-Thal war, or a story with Davros kicking around with some other empire the whole time...
Siskoid said…
Actually Lance Parkin's Davros audio is Dalek-less (and quite good).

On suggestions: You win.
Craig Oxbrow said…
If only it had been called Father Of The Daleks...
Siskoid said…
Cute, but I guess it was part of a villain-titled triptych along with Omega and Master (and Zagreus if you want to count it)

On Dalek-less stories, the novella The Dalek Factor could be interpreted as this.

Plus, Virgin had two goes at getting around their no Daleks restrictions. Lucifer Rising had a subplot about the approaching 22nd Century Dalek Invasion, and Godenging takes place right in the middle of that invasion, and features a number of appearances of the Dalek fleet and a brief (unlicensed) Dalek cameo.

Sec and the city

as a replacement title for Daleks in Manhattan
