Reign of the Supermen #177: Kal-El, Grandson of the Sovereign

Source: Action Comics Annual #6 (1994)
Type: ElseworldsKrypton explodes in 1768. Its lone survivor is Gar-El, the planet's only astronaut. Crash landing on Earth, he discovers the yellow sun has granted him great powers, which he uses to squelch a brewing rebellion. Oh, you know the one.
As the Warlock Royal, he ingratiates himself to Mad King George, helping him extend the Empire to the entire planet. He eventually succeeds the King as the Sovereign. More than two centuries later, the Sovereign is still alive and well despite having spawned 10 generations of neo-Kryptonians. Kal-El is the latest of these, and his blood is so diluted that he, like his father Jor-El, has no powers to speak of. Something else he shares with his father is the freedom-loving human values that got him killed.

After he sees newspaper man Peregrine White tortured and killed for speaking out against the fascist Kryptonian regime, Kal-El joins a nascent rebellion led by the mysterious "L". Lex? No, it's Lois. A rebellion you can trust then. He leads her to a secret vault where his great-great-umpity-great-grandfather keeps a chunk of kryptonite and seeing as it doesn't affect him, he agrees to go see the Sovereign with it. He tries to reason with the old man first though, but a sniper shoots him through the window.
It might have ended there, but a soldier then opens the box and Gar-El feels the sting of the green rock. He realizes Kal could have killed him but didn't and he sees the truth of the young man's words. He's brought with him not only Krypton's order, but its crushed spirit as well. He takes his grandson into his arms to bury him in the sun itself and leaves Earth to its own devices.

What will we do with the freedom Kal-El has bought so dearly for us? Let us not squander it.

Canadian federal elections May 2nd. Don't forget to vote. You can even vote for the Harperbot and the Kryptonian Party. That's what freedom is all about.
