Reign of the Supermen #233: Supergirl

Source: Elseworld's Finest: Supergirl & Batgirl (1998)
Type: Elseworlds/ReplacementIn a world where Superman never grew up on Earth and where Gordon, not the Waynes, was murdered in Crime Alley... Barbara Gordon become Batgirl, the fascist superheroine who closes down Gotham and imposes the law with the help of her happy-go-lucky financier, Bruce Wayne, while elsewhere, Kara Zol-El lands on Earth and joins the Justice Society of America as the last Kryptonian. Well, this isn't strictly a "What if?" about those those two origin stories, because other characters in the JSA also seem to have suffered from a paradigm shift. Captain Marvel is black. There's a Hawkwoman, but no Hawkman. Barda but no Mr. Miracle or Orion. A female Dr. Mid-Nite. Abin Sur as Green Lantern. And lest we think it's all about changing every character's minority group, Wonder Woman is basically herself, and Ambush Bug is a white male, albeit a sane one. This world also has superheroes with no clear analogs in our.

So Supergirl here isn't so much that world's Superman as she is a replacement for a Superman that never came. So what about this Elseworld's Kal-El. Oh, he exists...
He was just picked up by the wrong kind of guy. Ladies and gentlemen, say it with me, Lex Luthor!

So yes, this is the Elseworlds special that features Batgirl and Supergirl learning to trust each other, defeating a Joker hopped up on venom, and burying a baby. Upbeat!

I remember enjoying this quite a bit when it was first out, and I wish the gender-reversed Earth from the 52 (Earth-11) was this one instead.
