Reign of the Supermen #246: Superman Tree

Source: Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #112 (1971)
Type: Dream sequenceOn a dying planet, Superman finds a single living tree, so of course he decides to bring it home and threaten Earth's ecology by planting it in Metropolis Park. Since this is a Lois Lane comic, she is immediately jealous:
Entranced, Superman builds his beloved tree a moat of bubbling lava and under its orders, pinches Lois to sleep. She wakes up! Of course! A dream! But no! The radio confirms it's all real! Lois runs to the park to confront the tree, and the tree reveals her dastardly plan:
She's gonna turn Superman into a tree, mate with him, and their spores will in turn make everyone a tree! Lois' every attempt at murdering the sentient tree fail and pretty soon she's running from giant killer flowers. Cue Lois Lane freak-out scene (yes, just like yesterday's):
And then she wakes up. No, not Lois, even though we're used to her weird binge-dreams. The TREE wakes up. Fooled ya! It seems this species survives on brain waves by sharing minds with people and creating Silver Age stories for itself that the subjects (i.e. the food) aren't aware of. And this dream? It KILLS it. Superman mumbles something about human brains not being advanced enough, but we know better. That dream was definitely experienced through Lois' point of view. I'm drawing my own conclusion, and I invite you to do the same.

Comments

I've seen that comic numerous times at cons but never looked at the story inside.

It only takes up a third of the book. The other two are taken up by a "classic" Lois Lane reprint.

So, Lois saved the world through jealousy and hysteria?

Even at her worst, she's Metropolis's #1 reporter for a reason

The tree was only a world conqueror in its own fantasy. Looks like it was just gonna leave a couple of people spaced out for a few minutes each day.

So I prefer to think of it as her causing a genocide with her jealousy and hysteria.

Eww, identity-destroying tentacle-tree body horror. Score one for Lois.
