In The Quantum Quest, Captain Atom is zapped by Firestorm's shadow-double Shadowstorm and wakes up in the quantum field where the historical Rasputin tells him he is a quantum elemental and guides him in the creation of another universe. Yes, this happened. Nathaniel Adam created the world of his dreams, complete with his family restored, and as its creators, couldn't help by make "adjustments". With each change in his favor, his dark side grew and eventually attacked with shadow versions of Earth's heroes. And that's a two-for-one, folks. The Superman being killed by Shadow Superman is Captain Atom's own creation.
Because the 90s had their own kind of crazy.
