Reign of the Supermen #357: Siphoned Superman

Source: World's Finest Comics # 301 (1984)
Type: TransformationWhat could turn Superman into an overpowered, cosmic-looking monster with murderous intent? Well, how about this?

A recently-hired, but badly-vetted S.T.A.R. Labs research assistant gets assigned to study Superman's powers. He gets restless because all the actual scientists want to do is make lists of Superman's different brands of super-visions (at this point, it all sounds pretty reasonable), so he works on his own and makes a breakthrough: Superman's powers are manifested as super-charged energy bonds on the subatomic level. Further, he theorizes that Superman's power matrix could be disrupted, siphoned off and repurposed through the application of high energy physics. From there, it's just a skip and a jump to becoming a supervillain. Except something goes wrong and instead of de-powering the Man of Steel, the process turned him into a crazed energy being intent on killing "Siphon". Damn thing was immune to kryptonite too. A few tweaks to Siphon's pocket particle accelerator and Superman is back to normal! (Give or take a fight scene.)

Could you scan the picture of the atom with the energy crackling through it? apparently DC comics forgot they ever said this and it would be nice to send it to them as a reminder. I used to have this very comic but gave my entire collection to my nephew. (Superman tricks syphon with super-hearing to knock himself unconscious).

The point is likely moot now that we're two continuities down from the Bronze Age.
