It's in the Mail: How the JSA Picked its Members

Long before Jason Todd was dialed dead, the Justice Society of America was first to let the readers decide...

At the end of Sensation Comics #5 (May 1942), you could rank the 6 Sensation leads and help decide which would become members of the JSA. In exchange, why, 1000 lucky readers would get the July issue of Sensation FREE! And EVERYONE would get a Wonder Woman button (expressly not a bribe)!

For me, the hilarious thing would have been if the Black Pirate were made a member when he was running around a couple hundred years before they were. And can you imagine the Gay Ghost as a legacy character? Would Who's Who have been able to change his name to the Grim Ghost as easily? Little Boy Blue might have made a good mascot for the JSA, drawing Johnny Thunder's jealousy. But as we know, it was the other three who were eventually offered JSA membership.

The timing would seem to indicate that Wonder Woman actually won the popularity contest, joining the JSA in All-Star Comics #12, in September of 1942. No surprise there. She was the lead feature of Sensation, appeared on every cover, and as you can see, has a bigger headshot and her own logo on the contest ad. Wildcat and Mr. Terrific would only join 2½ years later in All Star Comics #24 (Spring 1945). But at least they made it!

Historical note: Last member to actually join in the Golden Age? Black Canary in All Star Comics #41 (June-July 1948).

It's such a foregone conclusion that Wonder Woman is clearly bored of the whole thing already.

Did she win because she was the only one with secretarial skills?

(Gosh, Craig and I are from the same city - that never happens!)

Sorry - delete this for irrelevance!

No, I like it. I find the particular Internet bubble I operate in is full of such connections.

But yeah, poor Diana. Makes it to the JSA and is stuck being its secretary. She must feel like, oh, every American Idol "winner" after Kelly Clarkson.

Blimey! Were you at Paul Cornell's FP signing a few months ago?
