By 2001, looks like the Eradicator had been turned into some kind of big-ass mech, so when he draws what is basically one of Marvel's Celestials to Earth, Superman has no choice but to use the Kryptonian mental martial art of Torquasm-Vo to face the Eradicator on another plane.
As you can see, wanting to put Superman armor is by no means anything new.
