I'd heard they were due to return in the next half-series of Doctor Who, those slithering Martians with a Klingon code of honor, the Ice Warriors, and the production team has just released their redesign to SFX magazine!
I'm quite a bit surprised at how on-model that is, actually. Their being reptiles, I thought for sure - and I know I wasn't alone - they'd go with a more saurian head, maybe even a tail. Do the lizard-men the new Silurians avoided being. But it looks like they kept the turtle-armor look, only with proper hands. On the one hand, I'm glad to see a real tribute to the original iconic design. On the other, it puts me in mind of some football game or SWAT raid. Maybe we'll finally see what a Martian looks like under the helmet!
The Ice Warriors appeared in four classic stories - The Ice Warriors, The Seeds of Death, The Curse of Peladon and The Monster of Peladon - facing off against the second and third Doctors, although in the third listed story, they were the good guys. Don't paint all Martians with the same brush kids! I suppose the return of classic Who's fourth biggest monster (behind the Daleks, Cybermen and Sontarans) is part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, but it's been too long coming in my opinion. Perhaps they were afraid people would roll their eyes at the Ice Warriors' origin planet. It IS rather quaint and dated.
But what do YOU think of the new Ice Warrior look?

It's like if the biggest recurring villain in "Green Lantern" comics was Sinestro, followed by the Lamplighter and Rink Willard.
The Terileptils beg to differ...
Monsters didn't recur as much as people think.
Tim: Homo Reptilia are really closer to Jem'Hadar than Silurians, aren't they?
But yeah, the gap between Sontarans and Ice Warriors reminds me of the Bill Hicks joke about the Iraqi army being the world's fourth largest.
"People say "Iraq had the fourth largest army in the world". Yeah, maybe, but you know what, after the first 3 largest armies, there's a real big ----ing drop-off. The Hare Krishnas are the fifth largest army in the world. And they've already got all our airports."
The drop-off isn't THAT big between the Sontarans and the Ice Warriors, as the potato heads only appeared in 4 classic serials too, and only inch out the Ice Warriors by being enemies in all four, also appearing in the Jim'll fix It episode, and getting a mention through the Rutans in Horror of Fang Rock. But strictly speaking, they're actually even Steven with the Ice Warriors, and actually appear in fewer EPISODES.
So maybe THEY'RE #3, and the Sontarans #4.
The real drop-off is after the Cybermen (10 classic serials).
(And having the Ice Warriors re-appear is vital to keeping the Weeping Angels down in the third tier with the Kinda entity...)
But they seem much more memorable than that!
