Siskoid's Comics Recollected - June 1983

Never two without three. Siskoid's Comics Recollected is a nostalgic project in which I revisit, month by month, my early comic-buying days, in the hopes of bringing your own memories of that month to bear.

This project would just not be possible without Mike's Amazing World of Comics and its comics-by-release-date database.

We will now move to a more weekly schedule cuz, y'know, I'm a writer first and foremost.

So, May 1979. Still strictly a Superman fan at the time, I picked up Action 498, JLA 169, and a couple of nice bookends on the story of Kandor in World of Krypton #2 and Superman 338. I was already a big fan of the Krypton mythology side of Superman, which was about to lead me to much more the the DC universe...

I think JLA 218 may have been the first DC comic I bought. Still have fond memories of it and is probably why I think of the Satellite era JLA as the default.

Jeff: I'm surprised at how important Superman is to my early purchases! DCCP, Superboy, Action, JLA in which he stars... It's surprising because I didn't think of myself as a Superman fan until the Byrne era.

Pointless: So do I, and I think for three reasons.
1) It was my first too.
2) I used the Satellite liberally in our DC Heroes role-playing games.
3) Morrison's JLA also used a "satellite" (the moon) and the Watchtower certainly had the same feel as the Thanagarian satellite.
