Questionable Friday: Which Super Pet Would You Put to Sleep?

That horrible, horrible question was submitted by Martin Gray of Too Dangerous for a Girl (a pretty great comics reviews blog, check it out), and it's taken me two whole weeks to come up with an answer. I mean, Super-Pets are AWESOME! Why would I want any of them dead even if I weren't an animal lover! If he's asking me to put down a member of the Legion of Super-Pets specifically (which is how the question could be interpreted), I can't see any of them deserving it. If I cast my net across all my comics lore, it doesn't get any easier.

There's the meta-continuity answer, I suppose. I don't care for the current incarnation of Krypto as a Game of Thrones dire wolf, but Krypto as a pure concept is usually wonderful, even if I've been very public about being a cat person. I don't have an affinity for dogs in real life, but they make great fictional characters.

So let's just take all the cats and dogs off the table. Even less pettable animals, like Bat-Cow, Throg or Topo, are clearly too cool to take to the vet for that final "exam". Heck, I even like Bill & Don the lobsters from the Fallen Angels mini-series! I actually think there should be MORE Super-Pet action in today's comics, not less!

Do anthropomorphic animals count? No, forget it, there isn't a member of the Zoo Crew, an Amazing Friend of Spider-Ham's, or a denizen of Aw Yeah Comics! I would want dead. So even if they counted...

So do I go with "annoying" and it's "goodbye Gleek"?

DECISION TIME! Ok, so I decided to go with a Super-Pet I didn't care about personally, that had not pettable characteristics to make it endearing, that was a heinous idea from its first appearance in 1975, and was further ruined in the 90s. Who am I talking about?  Why, Green Lantern's pet, Itty, of course!
Itty was this gross calcium-sucking space slug that tagged along on GL's adventures, only barely sentient, until writers came to their senses. Then in an issue of GLCorps Quarterly turned him into a monster and there was some mating involved... Anyway, real icky, and I don't know who asked for the character to be revisited (besides Ambush Bug, I mean), but there you go.

THERE! Does that satisfy you blood lust, Master Gray?!

Not to go all Chris Sims, but Comet the Super Horse who is also sometimes a person and Supergirl's boyfriend? What's that about?

The Silver Age, eh. You'd think the four key Super-Pets would all be survivors from Krypton, but only two are. Streaky was zapped by experimental kryptonite, and Comet, well, he was a horse with magical powers that used to be a Centaur in Ancient Greece, cursed by Circe, etc. He could turn into Bill Starr, a human identity that briefly dated both Supergirl and Lois Lane. Because Silver Age.

Fantastic, thank you so much. You came to the best possible solution, boy, I hated Itty, he was the Kari Limbo of Super-Pets!

I owe you one.

Thank you Martin, for comparing Itty to Kari Limbo. I spit out my tea.

Just so long as they don't off G'Nort. Again.

And I spit out my tea (well, coffee) this morning when I read you'd spit your tea over the Lari Limbo reference.

A spit-take loop.

You're very welcome, Kari Limbo was a truly terrible character - even Guy Gardner didn't want to bring her back to life when given the chance.

Did Kari Limbo ever meet Madame Xanadu?
Martin Gray said…
No, she was busy at Stupid Speech Pattern class with Moondragon.

I'm not sure I get the reference...?

This one is likely misremembering how Kari speaks, forgive me.

Itty was full on humanoid the last time I saw him... his monstrous transformation was actually at the end of his 70s appearances.

How about: the Zabu (sabre-tooth tiger of Ka-Zar) of Earth-2149 (Marvel Zombies Universe)? Technically he's already dead but would be more at peace asleep than as a zombie. Bonus points for being part of the Pet Avengers series (in normal continuity).

God, I hated Kari Limbo! The best thing about Zero Hour, is that Kari bought the big one! Bwhahahaha!

Er...perhaps I should calm down now. But it was lovely when she came smarming around after Guy again, and he called her Kari Bimbo.

I'd off the Red Bee's 2 bees so he could fall to his knees and scream "NOOOO!"

Sometimes I think things are funny that might not actually be funny.

No, that would actually be pretty funny.
