CAN we EVER save the 1990s from being called the worst decade in comics by simply showing off its best comics covers? Of course not, but seeing as Ranker's Top 99 from the decade tried to and in my opinion, failed... 1995 us really when the gimmick took over: LOTTTTSSSSSSSSSS of ugly foil, embossed or otherwise over-priced covers, and experimentation with multiple variants. Me, I was tempted to just use Jerry Ordway's Power of Shazam covers from the year, maybe with the occasional Frank Miller X, but no, I'll put in the work. Do feel you can play along and recommend different top covers than I do. As usual, I used Mike's Amazing World of Comics (link will take you to the start publication month, not the cover dated one) to play along.
But perhaps you have different ideas?
The Power of Shazam #1 by Jerry Ordway
Preacher #1 by Glenn Fabry
Kurt Busiek's Astro City #1 by Alex Ross
Ghost #7 by Adam Hughes
X #19 by Frank Miller
Sin City: Silent Night by Frank Miller (he had a thing for precipitation that year)
The Demon #56 by John McCrea (guys, a plane-shark, I'm not made of stone)
Swamp Thing #152 by Brian Bolland
Logan: Path of the Warlord #1 by John Paul Leon and Shawn Martinbrough
Xombi #18 by Howard Chaykin (loving the retro)

Last thing I read is that Morrison pretty much wrote this run of ST and covered for him when he didn't make deadlines, or rewrote the crap, and let him take the credit so he could build his career, something he would regret later.
How much of this is true is anyone's guess, but it certainly doesn't read like modern Millar.
