Last Saturday, I mentioned a story from Superman #179 (1965) in which a Kandorian couple got out of the bottle to whisk a piece of Gold Kryptonite to the Phantom Zone before Superman would come across it and lose his powers forever. They succeeded, but at the cost of their own, and decided to stay in the human world despite their diminutive size. Some of you wondered what was their fate? Well, wonder no more...
These Kandorians are Jay-Ree and Joenne, selfless, engaged, would-be macronauts who simply can't abide not being together.
After the incident in the outside world that left them powerless and unable to insure they wouldn't pollute Kandor's gene pool with unpowered children, they jump into Jimmy Olsen's pocket rather than tell Superman what happened and make him feel bad. Luckily, Jimmy is good with his hands and is able to build them a home with two apartments on account of them not being married yet.
It was the 60s and DC Comics were wholesome comics. They were also very silly, which is why Jimmy is then off to do a puppet show for his favorite Jimmy Olsen Fan Club, but because he slammed a suitcase lid on his fingers, he fails miserably, at least until the Kandorians replace the marionettes in Act 2...
And so it goes. The Kandorians spend the rest of the story trying to feel useful in their new lives, foiling one of Luthor's plots, doing some typing for a dead tired Jimmy, getting grabbed by hawks, and getting Clark out of trouble with Lois re: his secret identity. The usual Silver Age stuff. And eventually Superman finds out about them. To thank them, he uses the power vested in him by being the Last-ish Son of Krypton to marry them.
A couple modifications to their doll house, and voilĂ , a happy home inside Clark's apartment!
And as far as we know, they rode out the Silver and Bronze Age living there, but were never heard from again! Search as I may, I could not find another mention of the Jay-Rees.
But wait... doesn't Superman have a shrink and grow ray so HE can travel to and from Kandor?! Wouldn't it have made more sense to give the nice couple a chance at something more than doll furniture and bird seed? Did they end up getting flushed down the toilet after starving during one of Superman's extended trips in space? Or in Streaky's belly? That's a story that still needs to be told!
