Krypto #83: Mutt or Mutor?

From: Adventure Comics #398 (October 1970)

In "The Maid of Doom!", Supergirl is sent to three different aggressive planets on behalf of Earth's United Nations to deliver peace treaties. I think the idea is to show we've got Kryptonians so it's a bad idea to invade. When Supergirl returns, she's shocked to find she has a death touch that kills super-powered people and animals, possibly contracted on the radioactive world of the Erg. Streaky buys the farm, and then our boy Krypto.
Soon, so do Mxyzptlk (protesting his innocence) and Comet the Super-Horse. Superman has no choice but to ask the Maid of Steel to go get a Phantom Zone projector so she can be banished where she won't do any harm. She does and is zapped to the Zone, at which point "Superman" is revealed to be a shape-shifting Mutor from one of the aggressive worlds, the same Mutor who posed as every being Supergirl touched and killed:
In a final twist, Supergirl knew something was up thanks to having recorded Comet's telepathic "voice" by accident, so she built a fake projector and simply "banished" herself using super-speed, then followed the Mutor to his planet where, discouraged, the aliens agree to sign the treaty. Krypto shows up with the rest of the Superman Family at the end in time to hear this story and take part in the U.N.'s celebrations.
Did I announce to soon the death of the Silver Age a couple weeks ago? Sort of. This is a file story from Supergirl's recent PAST. The second story in the issue makes sure we know that
The new DC, there's no stopping us now. But we might backtrack a little until our file cabinets are empty.
