From: Superman Family #186-189 (November 1977-February 1978)
Last time, we met Ed Lacy, the private eye who agreed to be Krypto's beard - erm, owner - so the super-pooch could keep working in Hollywood with his girl Chelsea. It could have ended there, but Ed really, really likes hanging out on a movie set. But then, there are deals to be made, like when the studio buys the rights to the Krypto story and forces "Jocko" to wear a cape that would obviously give away his real identity!
Well, no one noticed really, but it could affect his relationship with Chelsea since she has a bit of Krypto-phobia. Ed's slumming about pays off when he's asked to sub for a bit player who's run off with a script girl in Jocko's western, and a disgruntled former employee of his tries to kill him by subbing bullets for blanks.
Krypto saves his life, but can't help Ed get the guy on account of his non-Kryptonian cape. Not that he needs help, you understand.
In the next installment, we discover that Chelsea doesn't think Jocko is at all like Krypto. He's much nicer. So that's good. But he still stands to get the role, right? I think a lot of the following dogs are wasting their time auditioning.
Actually, the casting call is for a stunt double. Still. Thankfully, there's this dog called Max who's also a white whatever breed and he gets the job. And Chelsea's kind of sweet on him. Uh-oh. And it's not helping that Krypto really should be THIS guy's double, seeing as he's more durable and less of an actor. Max keeps getting all the credit AND Chelsea's affections for Krypto's life-saving ploys.
Just then, Ed's sister Mary Jo shows up with a sob story about her son - his nephew - on the run from the police, wanted for a murder he didn't commit. Only a detective can help.
A detective... and his dog? Krypto begins a new chapter of his life, leaving fame, love and fortune behind for good old-fashioned friendship.
