My Comics Collection on Instagram

You know how it is. You get your first pocket device with a camera in it, someone convinces you to get on Instagram, you look for a reason to drop pictures on there, you "keep your brand alive". It's a common enough story. Probably.

Invariably, when someone hands me a camera at some function, they will find snaps of drinks, from dead on, made to look like planets, stars or space-time anomalies. That's what my friends wanted me to put on Instagram and I did that. But it wasn't really building my brand, was it? So for the last three months and, I suppose, many months ahead, I've been taking pictures of my comics collection and dropping them on there.

What might you find? Well, the American side of things starts around 1983, with some flea market purchases from earlier eras visible, and really ends around 1999, after which it becomes more about graphic novels and trades (I won't be posting "digital comics"). A LOT of superheroes, obviously, but in the 90s I really went on an indie and Vertigo rampage and got all sorts. On the Euro side, it's a lot of hardback books I gathered through the 70s and 80s, classic stuff.

I basically open a box and start taking pics, alternating with stuff that's on a shelf or in the next box over for variety. If a walk through comics memory lane is something you'd be interested, you can follow the account at https://www.instagram.com/siskoid/

And hey, it all links back to the blog, so if there's something you see on there you'd like this space to cover, you need only leave a comment. I'm always up for suggestions, and it sure helps when I have the comics on hand!

Thanks for that. I hope I get some work done. I bet I'll be impressed and envious!

I guess the beauty of Instagram is that it's just pictures, pretty quick to scroll through!

So I guess it's safe to say you're a Kirby fan?

I have that Marvel Year in Review, as well as some of the other stuff ... DD, Alpha Flight, Cap, Avengers, and of course, McFarlane era Spider-Man :) I think you have way more comics than me overall, though.

What is Escapist? I'm not familiar with it, but the covers look cool.

It's a Michael Chabon project (though by a variety of writers and artists) that imagines a Mister Miracle type superhero as if he'd always existed, with comics from the Golden, Silver and Bronze Ages "dug up" for these collections. It's pretty great.

What gave away my Kirby fandom? Might it be the TWO Kirby-related podcasts I was on last week? ;-)

Ach, instagram!
I keep being told by my web dude I HAVE to market thru that too, but it's set up for smartphones and ipads only... by the time I've taken a fuzzy cell-phone shot of the computer screen of my "product" the drop in quality ain't no kind of sales pitch. I only ever put up one photo and then decided my doom had caught up with me and I should quit while I've still got some self esteem left. A pal of mine is an actual photographer and it suits him down to the ground, thousands of followers on Instagram.

My own tattered comic collection takes a dramatic turn to Great Britain in the early eighties. By the time the first issue of Crisis on Infinite Earths hit the shelves (though I suspect it was a reprint here in NZ, the inks were horrible. Or was it just the adjustment period when comics shifted from letterpress to offset and hadn't mastered the new process? That happened in the eighties. Awful. They still look yucky 30 years later)

ahem, BY THE TIME... Crisis etc... I'd almost completely ditched The US and sold my soul for a weekly dose of 2000ad. Judge Dredd was so incredibly awesomely darkly funny (in a schoolboy way, not adult dark). By the mid nineties I'd lost 2000ad too. I suspect it was Siskoids Blog of Geekery which brought me back to comics!

Instagram certainly has its limitations. I don't know what the big deal is about letting PCs upload pics. It took me this long because I didn't have a mobile device before. That said, there are workarounds, but they're annoying.
