Krypto #96: Finishing Up the 70s

From: Superman Family #193 (January-February 1979); World of Krypton #3 (September 1979); Action Comic #500, DC Comics Presents #14, The Best of DC #1 (October 1979)

Just as Krypto's strip was wrapping up in Superman Family, they were introducing a Superboy feature in the book. You'd think that would be an avenue for Krypto appearances, albeit a younger Krypto than starred in Family. But no, he would only appear in ONE of those Superboy adventures.
After fooling around with meteors, Krypto returns a little later to stop the Mechanical Master's giant egg-beater/tornado-maker contraption, which is a shame considering the villain also uses a giant, flying fire hydrant. MISSED OPPORTUNITIES!!!

From there, the Dog of Steel appears months later in World of Krypton #3, a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment where Jor-El puts him in his capsule wearing a life support suit totally unlike anything Kal-El ends up wearing.
Then, three brief appearances in books cover-dated October 1979. Action Comics #500 is a celebration of Superman history/mythos and includes a page of the Man of Steel remembering his dog.
In DC Comics Presents #14, Krypto attacks and defeats a Superboy impostor.
And finally, The Best of DC #1 reprints Superman #149, "The Death of Superman!" which we covered HERE. And that was that. With Superboy getting a new book in the 80s, might there be better opportunities for Krypto? Stay tuned, we're not done yet!

You're going to get to "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" soon, I'm guessing.

That's going to be rough.

Not that soon. You have time to buy tissues.
