From Dr. Mid-Nite: "How He Began" by Charles Reizenstein and Stan Aschmeier, All-American Comics #25 (April 1941)
This month in All-American Comics, Dr. Mid-Nite makes his first appearance and joins Green Lantern and the Atom in the book, if not yet in the Justice Society. Dr. Charles McNider is blinded when a thug throws a grenade into his clinic, but when an owl, terrified by thunder and lightning, crashes into his home later (hey, Mid-Nite, Batman called...), he takes of his bandages and realizes he CAN see, but only in the dark. Most amazingly, the owl really takes to him, and as "Hooty", accompanies him on the ensuing crime-fighting adventures.
Believable?
