From Death Patrol: "The Five-Point Invasion of Britain" by Dave Berg, Military Comics #4 (November 1941)
Before the Doom Patrol, before the Suicide Squad, before the Dirty Dozen, ex-con pilots took to the skies to fight the Nazis as the Death Patrol! Created by Jack Cole, Military #4 features the earliest work I've noticed (at the proto-DC anyway) of Mad Magazine mainstay Dave Berg! Berg joined Will Eisner's studio in 1940, after serving in the Army Air Corps, so he presumably knew a little something about planes. We're decades away from "The Lighter Side"'s dad humor.
I really like that these guys are still in stripped prison wear as they go off to fight the good fight.
