Comics historian will immediately recognize that this panel isn't from the original printing of More Fun #73, but of a reprint facsimile. How? Because Aquaman has green gloves, while his first few appearances had him in YELLOW gloves (we'll track this to see the change happen). In this first appearance, future mega-star begins his "workout" by beating up on a German U-boat crew and its monocled captain, kind of following in the Sub-Mariner's wake. Proto-DC has decided, two and a half years late, to add an aquatic hero to its stable of characters, and I know I'm an Aquaman fan, but he feels iconic to me right out of the gate, in a way Namor never did. Being first doesn't always mean being best, y'know?
