From Aquaman: "The Return of Black Jack" by Mort Weisinger and Paul Norris, More Fun Comics #75 (January 1942)
So... did Aquaman not have the ability to talk to fish and other sea creatures in the early days? When did he start? Because in his third appearance here, he fights a belligerent squid and kills a shark with a sharp sea shell! Or did the Golden Age Aquaman just not have this power? And if that's true, did stand-up comedians of the time not make lame jokes about him?
So to recap what we know of the GA Aquaman:
1. Yellow gloves/fins.
2. Doesn't talk to fish.
3. Has a recurring enemy called Black Jack (who will eventually port over to Earth-1 because he's in some of the Adventure Comics stories too). I kind of wish he'd gotten a Who's Who entry now. Aquaman villains didn't exactly get a lot of respect.
