From Starman: "Case of the Magic Bloodstone!" by Gardner Fox, Jack Burnley and Ray Burnley, Adventure Comics #72 (March 1942)
In this story, Starman fistfights a bunch of Arab assassins (like, four at a time), then goes on to physically abuse a bear and a tiger. Never does he throw a star bolt at them, or try to put them in star bubble, and then it hit me. It's a gravity rod, and he really only uses it for flying, even if there are instances of it being used to melt some evil gadget or other. Am I just remembering how he was used LATER? Definitely a more physical hero than we might think.
