What today's readers possibly don't know is that in his first appearance, Woozy had a super-power, soon ignored in later stories, gifted to him by the wizard he saved from drowning. I guess there was a limit to how long he would be "thanked", but for that story, he was under the protection of natural forces so couldn't come to harm. It was played as a joke and could have lasted longer as a kind of "dumb luck" power, but the sidekick can't overshadow the hero for too long.
