One Panel #720: Jungle Girl #1!

Now begins our coverage of comics on the stands in October of 1942...

From "Perils of Nyoka" by Rod Reed(?) and Harry Anderson, Jungle Girl #1 (November 1942)

...and we begin with a new title on the stands - Jungle Girl, to become Nyoka the Jungle Girl with its second issue -  a comic based on a well-received movie serial starring Frances Gifford. It spawned a sequel and several comics (the first published by Fawcett, which is why she merits inclusion here, perhaps this once), and was also one of Tina Turner's stated influences for her stage persona. The serial was very loosely based on a story by Edgar Rice Burroughs, but it's so different (there's a jungle girl in it, that's about all), we can give credit to Republic.

This first issue is full of cliffhangers like the serial that gave her life. Note that Nyoka doesn't usually wear animal skins, like the jungle girls that would follow.
